My wife and I were able to walk away from the Shepherding/Discipleship movement back in 1983. In 1973 we were new Christians and became part of a home group that had direct ties this movement through Scott Ross, The Love In Community, (Now with CBN) who was one of Bob Mumford's right hand men. It took us several years to recover from this experience and we have been close to others that have left since.

Even though the movement officially ended, the stranglehold on peoples lives did not. We are currently ministering to a man who has decided that after 20 years of bondage he wanted to be freed but his wife has such false loyalties to the Pastor and his wife, to the point that she is choosing to remain married to the fellowship rather than her husband.

There are still a large number deeply entrenched at the church we used to be in bondage to and we pray for their eyes to be opened to the truth of God's word regarding the situation they are mired in.

I appreciate this ministry and I have researched this area of church abuse and I have just found your site today on the \o/ Praise - Heresy Warning link site which our site is on and I have read through most of the articles and will link to some of them on my Spiritual Abuse page. May the Lord bless your steadfastness.

I'm sure glad I found this website. I need everything I can after escaping a Spiritual abusive 'church' I attended for 16 years (along with my husband and 6 children)

Nice site. Never been battered but my heart goes out to those that get caught up in this spiritual crime.

When looking for a church if emphasis is placed on anything more than Christ, His Love, and His Word then it is a church in need of repair and one should probably find another place to worship.

Dear Saints At Battered Sheep:

Having listed your site for recommendation to others in the past, I am very disappointed to find that you've published the "Gene Edwards: Good, Bad, and Ugly" article.

Having been happily involved in a church Edwards planted for nearly half a decade, I find the authors' comments in the article extremely one-sided and not at all indicative of my experience in the church.

Briefly, my involvement (and my observation from spending time with about a half dozen other house church communities of our "flavor") has been one of grace and _freedom from_ legalism and abuse, not the opposite. I am not trying to negate the opinions of the authors of the article, one of whom is a friend of mine. I simply feel that they only take into account "interviews" of those who felt dissatisfied, and thus write a piece that alienates the rest of us and paints a wrong-headed picture of the various churches Gene Edwards is involved with on the whole. The figure that "the majority of churches Gene has worked with have collapsed" is simply not true.

For a pro-active look at the other side of communities loosely associated with Gene, check out http://www.ChristInYall.com Also check out the ANTI-CULT (!) book Edwards has written, "Letters To A Devastated Christian," which was penned to help those struggling in the "Shepherding Movement." (This can be obtained from http://www.Seedsowers.com)

Again, to recap: I have been part of a church Edwards planted and am anything _but_ a "battered sheep!" To be certain there are problems, but nothing unusual, and on the whole I have had a very positive and grace-filled Christian experience. (And yes, we use our Bibles!). I would urge those of you in charge of the site to take this article down from your site until you can discern this matter from a more balanced perspective, taking into account both perspectives. Otherwise, you might give people who have never even heard of Edwards a bad taste in their mouths against brethren in Christ for no apparent, edifying reason.

Sincerely,

Michael Morrell

I'm very pleased to have found this blessed site and the opportunity to share with you my work.

I'm the author of "A Young Girl's Crimes", which is a highly gripping and controversial Christian novel about one young woman's descent into murder and sexual perversion and attempt to redeem herself through moral spiritual Biblical values. But can she escape her dark past? It's based on my study of real-life case histories of women and girls who started out doing "bad things" but change their lives for good through God. I molded these factual stories into the story of one girl, Flora. I HOPE YOU'LL CHECK OUT THE LINK I HAVE PROVIDED HERE and give my book a read, it will give you a powerful realistic understanding of mortal sin and spiritual redemption, and I'm told its an extremely entertaining read as well. Please email me afterwards with your thoughts. Thanks very much for supporting a young new author :).

Thank you for searching out and proclaiming the truth, not just a few selected scriptures but the entire biblical truth.

Love your site, yes, there is a need for this information. Two good books I read are "The Drift Into Deception" by Agnes Lawless and "Exposing Spiritual Abuse" by Mike Freuler. Though my case was not as extreme as some, it was hurtful to our whole family. We belonged to this church for 12 years. I found out who my real friends were when we left. We found a great healthy church now, but it is hard to trust again.

I found your site to be very interesting. The graphics where eye catching and added a feeling of friendliness and lightness to what is a very heavy subject. The spacing, type, and set up of the pages was also very pleasing and made it easy to find the way around and ease of read.

On the other side the material was very serious and well explained. The mixture of Scripture, other articles, and personal viewpoints and feelings where a good combination. It was a combination that made the reader wanting to read all.

Although I haven't read all the articles yet I plan to in the near future. I also personally see a VERY BIG need in the Christian realm for this kind of information and support. It is a subject that many in the Christian church do not want to see and deal with, but in denying its existence the church is not allowed to mature, improve and grow.

In all I wish to thank the person(s) for this site as it has helped me and my family. There are many hurt and searching Christians out there that need comforting, understanding, and much prayer. I pray that we as a whole body of Christ do not leave these without resources and hope.
